Water Plants
The pond store offers a large variety of pond plants from hyacinths and water lettuce to potted plants such as lilies and water lotus.
Plants provide valuable biological filtration by removing excess nutrients from the water that algae would otherwise use to feed on, resulting in green water, string algae, or both. But algae control is not the only way plants help your water garden.
Submerged and marginal aquatic plants provide food, shade and protection for the fish and other wildlife that live in and around your pond, and they also provide a place for spawning fish to lay their eggs. The plants don't even need to be in the pond to help the wildlife. Plants that are placed around the edges of your pond attract birds, insects, butterflies, frogs and others to your watery paradise.
The pond plant selection at Fins, Feathers, Paws & Claws is second to none in the area. Carrying a wide variety, including submerged plants, which help to compete with algae for the nutrients in the water as well as providing oxygen for your fish.
Floating plants that provide shade to keep you pond cooler, cover to protect your fish from the eyes of predators and also pull nutrients from the water to compete with algae.
Marginal's or bog plants is where we have a huge selection. These are the plants that make our pond pretty, adding color texture & height to your pond. From creepers that provide cover to the showy taros & cannas that can get 4 feet tall with spectacular leaves & blossoms. We should have the marginal you are looking for.
We carry Hardy & Tropical varieties of water lilies. Hardy Lilies come back year after year. The Hardy Lilies come in white, yellow, peach, pink, and red. We sell the lilies by variety name so we know what the flower will look like & how large or small size it will reach. We have lilies for a small water feature or a large pond in the shade or in direct sun.
Tropical water lilies are an annual plant unless you provide special care inside for the winter, but they are worth the trouble or expense of buying one every year. Tropical Lilies come in white, pink, red, blue and purple. There are also night bloomers that open late afternoon & close in the morning, so if you work, you get to see the spectacular blooms. Hardy Lilies open mid-morning & close late afternoon only visible to the working person on the weekend.
One of Tom's favorite water lilies is the Tropical Victoria Lilies. These are the giants of the lily world. The leaves, which are native to South America, can reach 9 feet in diameter each. These are night bloomers with blossoms that can be 9 inches. The leaves are heavily armored with thorns that sometimes make their care a little painful, but they are worth the trouble for people with large ponds and a passion for the spectacular. We have the victories' every year & even built a pond just for them.
Fish
On a typical day here at the pond store we carry hundreds of fish. We carry goldfish, shubunkins, orfs and a very large variety of koi.
To most people a water garden simply wouldn't be complete without fish swimming through the water. Whether we keep fish for their bright shimmering colors, the movement of the water or for the more practical reasons such as mosquito control, fish are an important addition to a pond. Some of us name our fish and care for them as we would any other pet.
Although it can be as simple as picking the fish that looks the prettiest, to the true enthusiast selecting a fish is much more involved. Considerations should be made when planning the pond as to what type of fish you desire. This plays a big role in determining the size of the pond and especially the filtration needs. Adequate filtration is very important when keeping fish.
Scavengers
Snails, mussels and tadpoles are essential because they consume organic wastes that settle to the bottom of the pond. They graze on the sides and surfaces of the pond and they consume suspended algae in the water.
Snails are the small time gardeners in your pond. Snails eat the algae off of your plants. Since oxygen grasses compete with algae for the grasses and nutrients, the algae tends to concentrate around the oxygenating grasses. Snails clean your plants and pots, keeping them free to flourish in your pond.
Filtration Systems
When constructing your pond, one of the most important choices you will make is what filter to install and use. Here at The Pond Store we stock a range of filters to suit all needs. Whether you are on a budget or planning the koi or fish pond of your dreams, you will find a suitable filtration system.
